When designing advanced ceramic components the right material choice is very important. One could roughly state the following about the different ceramics

  • Al2O3 To be used when thermal and electrical properties are important. Has a good mechanical strength and wear resistance property.
  • ZrO2 To be used when mechanical (toughness) properties are important. Has a low thermal conductivity. Has outstanding surface finishing possibilities.
  • Si3N4 To be used when extreme mechanical properties are important. Has also good thermal and electrical properties.
  • SiC To be used when extreme mechanical properties at high temperature levels are important. Has a low electrical resistivity.
